Viansa Winery’s 2005 Sempre Avanti (which means ‘always forward’ in Italian) is an Italian-style red wine comprised mostly of Sangiovese, with smaller amounts of Merlot, Zinfandel, Teroldego and Cabernet Sauvignon blended in. Teroldego, which is a lesser-known Italian verietal is grown primarily in the northeastern region of Alto, Italy and is often compared to Zinfandel with its spicy red fruits and hints of tar, pine, and almond. Its acidity makes it a versatile food wine and an excellent addition to Italian field blends. Produced from the Sonoma County appellation, the 2005 Sempre Avanti Red Blend starts off with complex aromas of exotic spice, dried flowers and fresh raspberries and cedar undertones. On the palate there is a nice complex mixture of spice, leather and raspberries that lead into a rich and lingering finish with subtle oak and integrated tannins. This Gold Medal Wine Club Special Selection is a delicious and refreshingly different blend of five varietals that showcases the exciting Italianesque ‘field blends’ that are coming out of California. Try pairing the Viansa 2005 Sempre Avanti with pizza and heavier pasta dishes.
